Professor Felicjan Pištkowski passes away Founder of the Institute of Print of Warsaw University of Technology, Feli-cjan Pištkowski died at the age of 96 on 7th June, 2004. An engineer geodesist, among other duties, he held the offices of Director of National Bureau of Cartography of Main National Institute of Measures and Head Director of National Institute of Photogrammetry and Cartography. In 1952, he began working at Warsaw University of Technology, from 1954 to 1956 he performed the duties of Dean of the Department of Geodesy and Cartography. In 1967, professor Pištkowski took on the task of creating a completely new syllabus for the study of print. He headed the newly created De-partment of Print for 8 years Đ till 1975. In the course of his didactic activity, he provided guidance for 85 students with their Master's Theses and conferred 10 Master's Theses in the field of Carto-graphy and Print. He was also the author of numerous textbooks, articles, lectures and papers. In September 1998 he took part in the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the Institute of Print. Professor Felicjan Pištkowski re-ceived many honours and awards; he was also a prize-winner of ŇKamień MilowyÓ (ŇMilestoneÓ) Đ an honour awarded by Poligrafika at its 50th anni-versary to the most renowned people in the printing business. Trade meetings after drupa After the Drupa Exhibition, several trade meetings were held in order to promote new technologies presented in DŸsseldorf. 1st Printing Rendez-Vous was held at the Institute of Print of Warsaw University of Technology (IPPW) on 16th June. It was organised jointly by the Alumni Association of IPPW and Poligrafika. It was devoted to pre-press and digital print solutions pre-sented at drupa. Over 80 persons participated in the meeting; there were representatives of printing companies, suppliers, trade publications as well as students of three Polish institutions of higher learning educating future staff for the printing industry. 10 percent of the profit gene-rated by the meeting is designated for the purchase of equipment for one of the didactic laboratories of the Insti-tute. Also the theme of this yearŐs Koło-brzeskie Dni Poligrafii (Kolobrzeg Days of Print), held from 23rd to 25th June, was drupa; most lectures referred to new technologies presented in DŸssel-dorf. The conference was organized by Szczecin Education Agency with the cooperation of Polish Chamber of Printing, all under the media auspices of Poligrafika. 5th Congress of Polish Papermakers 5th Congress of Polish Papermakers was held in Lodz on 3rd of June. New authorities of the Association of Polish Papermakers were elected with Jerzy Majewski (photo above), President of International Paper-Kwidzyn S.A., be-coming President of the Association. Association of Polish Papermakers is a technological, scientific and mana-gerial organisation comprised of indi-vidual members and businesses, whose operations are related to the paper industry. Awards, prizes and honours were also given at the Congress to several people in recognition of their contri-bution to the trade. Merger of Polish Security Printing Works (PWPW) and Drukarnia Skarbowa On 27th May, General Shareholders Meeting of PWPW and Drukarnia Skarbowa decided on a merger of the two companies through a transfer of all equity of Drukarnia Skarbowa to PWPW. In return for the stock of Dru-karnia Skarbowa, its sole shareholder the State Treasury will be given stock in the share capital of PWPW increased by PLN 16.8 million. The reason for the merger was that the two companies performed some of the same operations. Representatives of the State Treasury also claimed that it would be easier for a single legal entity to win government tenders. Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 Duo at Cezar One of the most important invest-ments of the Cezar Printing House this year, a full-size Speedmaster CD 102 Duo, is the first in the world offset printing press equipped with flexo-graphic printing units. It had been con-figured especially for the needs of Cezar. The press weighs 70 tons (over 154 thousand pounds), is 28 meters long (over 90 feet) and prints at a maximum speed of 15,000 sheets per hour. Prin-ting is carried out in the UV offset technology and the flexo units enable the application of solid white, pearl pigment, varnish and high-quality metallised ink coating in line.
